Wedding speeches

Speeches are a crucial part of a wedding. Don't feel that the speeches have to be at the end of the meal, but if you do have them at the start, keep to a timetable so your meal is served on time.

If the father of the bride hasn't yet given a toast, he may want to say a few words at the end of the speeches. An easy way to include this is for the best man to end with a toast to the parents, providing a reason for the father of the bride to respond. And remember, when giving a speech, speak loudly and clearly!

Here's a typical format for wedding speeches:

The first speech

A toast to the bride and groom. It should be done by an old family friend, someone who knows the bride well and knows the groom. Often this is the father of the bride.

The second speech

A thank you to the guests, from the bride and/or bridegroom. It's often done by the groom, but it can be either or both.

The last speech

The best man's speech, although it could be done by the chief bridesmaid. It is expected to be funny, but keep it tailored to the occasion and suitable for your friends and family.
