Where did you get married?
We got married in St John's Church in Bexley by a lady minister. Both of us have been married before. We had our reception in a Catholic church hall a stone's throw from the church. There were about 80 guests. My son Dale walked me down the aisle and Tony's son Matthew was the best man. My daughter Gemma was my chief bridesmaid.
What was your wedding cake like?
My cake was fantastic! I bought it from Marks and Spencer and then decorated it myself. It was a Victorian-style 'cake upon a cake' in ivory with a cream sash, tiny ribbons, little crystals and lots of tiny flowers that I made out of sugar.
Did you have a caterer? What did you and your guests have to eat?
We had an 'Elizabethan buffet' which was a sit-down buffet with lots of different cold meats and salads. To drink, we had Buck's Fizz to start, followed by white and red wines and of course, champagne. In fact, we've still got some of the champagne that we're saving to drink on our anniversary!
What music did you have?
We had church music at the service and the choir sang music arranged to the melody of 'Morning Has Broken'. At the reception we had arranged for a disco DJ. The DJ was very late – this was the only part of the day that didn't go according to plan! We had two first dances – one was Shania Twain and the other was Bryan Adams' 'Everything I do, I do it for you.'
Where did you go on your honeymoon?
We have a friend who has a house in Benalmadena in Spain so we spent a week there relaxing, going on tours, visiting lakes etc... Unfortunately I got major flu while we were away! We're going back there this year to celebrate our anniversary. We also had a 2nd honeymoon in Suffolk which is where my husband is from.
Did you organise the wedding yourself or did you have help?
I did most of the planning myself – I started organising it a year in advance. My husband said "the only thing you didn't organise was the church!" I did design a huge majority of the wedding, from the bridesmaids' dresses and tiaras to the wedding favours. I got plain ballerina shoes and embroidered them for the bridesmaids to wear. I also made the confetti out of tissue paper.
Where did you find your suppliers, like your photographer and caterer?
I did a lot of research, mostly online. My photographer was called Simon Earwicker and he was a local chap. When I met him, we just got on like a house on fire immediately so I knew he was going to be great.
What was the highlight of the day for you?
The whole thing was fantastic. For our wedding night, we went to Rowhill Grange. There was a bottle of champagne waiting for us in the room, so we took the bottle down and sat on their beautiful lawns and chatted forever. It was very romantic.
Were there any unexpected disasters or did anything funny happen?
Well, apart from the DJ fiasco, one of my little bridesmaids was wearing a hairpiece because she has very fine hair, but she wanted to take it off during the reception because the pins were hurting her head. So the hairpiece made the rounds of the wedding party, and lots of pictures were taken of people looking like they had a hamster on their heads!
What advice would you give to people thinking of planning a wedding?
I would say make sure you give yourself plenty of time. Don't be pressured into doing or having something you don't want. I was ok because I had a very clear idea of what I wanted. I was so pleased with all the things I organised and designed. I have the skills to do it, but also when you actually do things yourself it give you such pride.
